The Seaford varsity boys’ soccer team defeated Woodbridge, 3-2, on their home field in a physically intense Henlopen South match. Seaford head coach Bill Johnson said the team is experiencing wins and is seeing a switch in their excitement, “We dominated the first half of play and had some great plays.” Seaford’s Luke Metzner showed his goalkeeper strength with 15 saves in the game.
The Blue Raiders had first opportunities to score on two straight direct kick penalties and a corner but Seaford, led by defensive back Francesco Colasuonno, cleared the ball each time.
“Francesco was everywhere and always right where we needed him to be,” said Johnson.
The first Seaford score of the game came off the foot of Woodbridge’s Evan Judy at the sixth minute of play who was trying to push the ball out the end zone taking the goalkeep by surprise when it found the net.
Seaford was whistled for a penalty trip yet Woodbridge was unable to take advantage and the Blue Jays’ Joseph Louisma responded with a quick clear and attack that beat Woodbridge goalkeeper Yandel Torres-Rodriguez (10 saves) to the ball and scored at the 12 minute of play for a 2-0 Seaford lead. The first shot on goal by Woodbridge hit the left goal bar and ricocheted away from play.
The teams battled at midfield which led to the first yellow flag against Seaford. The Blue Raider strikers Kevin Gonzalez-Deleon and Lucas Morales Perez worked together but Metzner made the save.
Coach Johnson said of Metzner, Luke had 15 saves and three were goal-saving stops and key to the win.”
Seaford scored at the 28 minute when Joseph Louisma worked with Gabriele Colasuonno who faked out and flipped the ball past Woodbridge for the 3-0 lead.
“We had two great goals and on both goals the guys were patient on finishing and made good shots,” Johnson said. “They (Louisma and Gabriele Colasuonno) took some other good shots with 14 shots on goal in the game.”
Woodbridge scored in the closing moments of play in the first half when a shot hit the cross bar, deflected back into play and Kevin Gonzalez-Deleon got a header shot past Metzner for the 3-1 score. In stoppage play, Seaford’s Jephthe Francois was red carded for a dangerous high kick which placed Seaford with one man down for the remainder of the match.
In the second half Woodbridge scored at the 43rd minute with a quick shot off the foot of Gonzalez-Deleon for a 3-2 match score. Seaford played to keep the ball out of the circle while Woodbridge fought to push forward but was unable to score and Seaford won the match.
Johnson said, “Great game, the 14-15 players that got in, you could not tell the difference because they did not fundamentally change which is great to see in the team.”
