Robert D. “Bob” Jones, Jr. of Laurel passed away on Feb. 11, 2024. He was the son of the late Robert Sr. and June (Gower) Jones of Elmira, NY. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and David.
Bob graduated from Southside High School in Elmira, NY and served six years in the Navy. In 1971, the family moved to Delaware to pursue his career as a toolmaker at NCR in Millsboro and at Airpax Corporation in Cambridge; retiring in 2005.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Smith) Jones; sons, David (Susie) of Carlisle, Pa. and Thomas (Monica) of Lewes; three grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Bob was an active member of the Laurel Lions Club with perfect attendance for 45 years. He held various positions at the club level and served as a District Governor in 2007-2008. He also served as a Leader Dogs for the Blind chairperson for the district and multiple districts for the past 20 years. Since his desire was to help those in need, he also volunteered in numerous projects that the Lions Club was involved with within the community.
He also helped with the Good Samaritan Aid Organization in Laurel. Bob was a long-time volunteer at his church, Centenary United Methodist Church, and was the backbone to the sound system and technology needs for church services and miscellaneous functions. Bob loved singing and sang for 25 years with a group called the “Humanaires,” where he sang rock and roll, pop, gospel, and country songs; along with doing skits. He also sang with a church group called “Faith Gospel Trio,” which sang gospel songs at several churches in the surrounding area.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 200 W. Market St., Laurel. Friends may visit from noon-2 p.m. prior to the service. Reverend Dean Perdue will officiate.
