Hubert Vaughan Prettyman, formerly of Newark, died April 16 from chronic lung and heart conditions while in home hospice care in Green Valley, AZ. Hubert was born in Laurel in July of 1932 to the late Hubert A. and Ruth V. Prettyman. He was the oldest of five children. Hubert graduated from Laurel High School in the class of 1950. He received an AA degree at Goldey Beacom College before enlisting in the army for three years. Following his overseas military service, Hubert earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Rider University. He continued his studies at the University of Delaware, earning a Master’s degree in education. 

Hubert was a high school teacher for 27 years in the Christiana School District. He started teaching at Newark High School, then transferred to Christiana High School and was chair of the business education department of Glasgow High School. He retired in 1988. 

Hubert enjoyed spending time with his family and pursuing his family’s genealogy. He was an avid reader and appreciated history, especially the Civil War. He loved refinishing old furniture, bargain hunting, and garage sales. His favorite movies were from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. He also liked sitting on the porch and feeding and watching the birds. Hubert was a fan of good food and truly liked Dairy Queen’s chocolate ice cream and root beer floats. He enjoyed eggnog and fruit cake and relished a nicely aged, high-quality bourbon.

Hubert is survived by his two sons, Allen V. Prettyman of Green Valley, AZ, his wife Tara and their children, Morgan Waad (Tyler) of Newark and Duncan V. Prettyman (Ari) of Wilmington; his son Stephen R. Prettyman and his wife Jacquelyn of Lewes; his brothers Joseph R. Prettyman of Harrington and daughter Rebecca Collison and son Joseph Prettyman, Stephen E. Prettyman (Lorraine) of Seaford and their daughter Jennifer Prettyman Venables; nieces Fan Donaway and Ruthann Markow Pyle. His parents and two sisters, Barbara Yurek (John) and Mary Louise Markow (Paul), and sister-in-law Betty Prettyman preceded him in death. A memorial graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 8 at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.

Hubert was a staunch advocate for education and public libraries. Instead of flowers, the family asks that you donate to your local public library in his honor. Arrangements are in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home in Laurel.
