The town of Delmar is looking to bring back Delmar Heritage Day for the first time since 2019 after last year’s event was rained out. The annual town gathering began after the town held a sesquicennial (150 years) celebration in 2007. After a successful event, the town decided to make it a yearly festival.
Heritage Day was cancelled due to weather in 2018 and last year and was not held from 2020 through 2022 due to COVID. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a rain date of Sept. 28.
“We really looked forward to it last year. When the weather did what it did we were disappointed,” said Delmar Administrative Assistant Starr Conaway. “We’re really excited to get it done this year.”
This year’s Heritage Day will include free carriage rides, a rock climbing wall, craft and food vendors, information booths, and the band Double Nickels will perform. As of Tuesday the town had over 30 vendors lined up including food vendors serving oyster sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, and snow cones but it is still looking for more vendors, especially food vendors. Visit the town’s Facebook page for more info.
North and South Pennsylvania Ave. will be closed for the event. South Pennsylvania Ave. will be closed from East East Street to State Street while North Pennsylvania Ave. will be closed from State Street to Jewell Street.
There will be touch a truck display on South Pennsylvania Avenue with fire equipment, farm equipment, the police department’s hummer, and public works equipment for kids to check out. Vendors will be set up on North Pennsylvania Avenue and the band will perform in the courtyard in front of town hall.
Parking will be available behind St. Stephens Church and in the Short Funeral Home parking area (if available).
The event is scheduled on the same day as the town’s farmers marker, so the farmers marker vendors will be set up down town in order to get more traffic.
