The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware (DSA of DE) is thrilled to announce the 14th Annual Days of Summer Camp for individuals with Down syndrome will be held at three locations throughout the state – Milton in Sussex County, Magnolia in Kent County, and Wilmington in New Castle County.
“The goal of the camp is to allow children with Down syndrome the opportunity to have the experiences of summer camp while practicing independence, developing their physical and emotional health, as well as increasing their confidence levels,” says Lauren Camp Gates, executive director of DSA of DE. “We strive to maintain an atmosphere where children can build great peer relationships and have a fun experience at camp!”
Camp is open to individuals with Down syndrome ages 3-13, and their siblings ages 3-10, who enjoy opportunities to splash in the water, build crafts, and play in the sun, just like any other child at camp. A certified nurse and teacher are always on-site, and young adults ages 15-25 serve as counselors. Volunteers are paired up with each camper to ensure camp is a safe, and fun, memory-making experience for all participants.
Thanks to the many business partners and individual supporters who help offset the soaring costs to attend summer camp, over 400 children have enjoyed the Days of Summer Camp experience since 2010 in a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment – all at no cost to attendees!
Parents are particularly appreciative of the Days of Summer Camp experience that is offered to their child(ren) with Down syndrome. One parent of an attendee at last year’s Sussex County camp shared, “This is our first year and I just can’t express how much fun the kids had and how appreciative we are that this camp was available for both my children.”
This year’s Days of Summer Camp runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the DSA of DE Milton Office in Sussex County from June 24-28, David E. Robinson Elementary School in Kent County from July 15-19, and Tatnall Upper School Gymnasium in New Castle County from July 29-August 2.
