Delaware Governor John Carney visited Laurel last Thursday as part of his last visit to western Sussex as Governor.

“The friendships I have developed have been special. I have met people I wouldn’t have met if I wasn’t (an elected official),” said Carney, who first ran for office (Lt. Governor) 24 years ago.

Prior to the lunch, Laurel Mayor John Shwed presented Carney with a proclamation proclaiming the day John Carney Day in Laurel. Delmar Mayor Tom Bauer also presented the governor with a railroad spike (donated by the Delmar Historical Society) with a plaque on it.

Carney recalled speaking at Delmar High School graduation on the school’s football field.
