Emerson Roy Owens of Chestertown, Md., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2020, after several years at the Methodist Manor House in Seaford.

Born on April 18, 1932 in Delmar, Del., Roy was the son of the late Hollis J. and Mary (Sinclair) Owens. 

Roy graduated from Delmar High School in Delmar, Del., attended the University of Delaware, and was a graduate of the Stonier School of Banking. He began his banking career as a teller for the former Sussex Trust Company in Laurel and had a long career in banking. He served as president of Peoples Bank of Chestertown from 1975 to 2002. At the age of 72, he retired from Peoples Bank as CEO and chairman of the board. 

Roy was active in numerous civic clubs, including over 50 years as a Lions Club member, and over 20 years in the National Guard. He also served as president of the school board for the Laurel School District. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Chestertown and was active in the church including a term as the church treasurer until his illness.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a genuinely kind and likable individual with a good heart.

Roy is survived by his sons, Alan Owens and his wife Melissa of Columbia, S.C., Dean Owens and his wife Elisa of Contoocook, N.H., and Ed Owens and his wife Kathy of Laurel; two stepchildren, Jeff Elliott and his wife Cheryl of Seaford and Susan Ashley and her husband Charles of Chestertown; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Owens and older brother, Edward Owens.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Christ United Methodist Church in Chestertown, where friends and family may call from 10 to 11.

There will be a fellowship luncheon at the church immediately after the service, followed by interment at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.
