James Layton “Jim” Willey, Sr. of Laurel passed away on Aug. 29, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Feb. 17, 1930 in Milton to the late John Layton Willey and Arzie Carpenter Willey.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army in the Korean War and the Fifth Regional Combat. Jim retired as a mechanical engineer for the E.I. Dupont Company.
He is survived by wife of 69 years, Emma Jean Bounds Willey; son, James Willey, Jr. and his wife Chrystal; grandchildren, Jared Willey, Joshua Willey and his wife Melanie; and great-grandchildren Jett Willey and Owen Willey. He was preceded in death by his nine brothers and sisters. Jim was a member of Shiloh Community Church and he loved gardening, traveling, listening to country music, hunting, fishing, and was a car enthusiast.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10 from 1-2 p.m. at the Hannigan, Short, Disahroon Funeral Home, 700 West Street, Laurel, Delaware 19956. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Reverend Mark Erskine and Reverend Danny Tice will officiate. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.
