The Woodbridge varsity wrestling team advanced to the Division II state dual meet championship with a 48-18 win over Laurel last Saturday in Smyrna. The Raiders’ Tae’Shaun Ford-Jackson, Phoenix Dean, Michael Hutchison, Duane Cooke, Gavin Manning, and Brandon Williams recorded pins while Cody Drummond won by fall for the Bulldogs.

Woodbridge won the first four matches by decision to take a 12-0 lead. Brenton Williams (152) earned a 10-3 win over Chase Phippin; Cole Gibbs (160) held off Jett Furbush, 2-1; Ellis Cannon (170) picked up a 5-1 win over Travis Rife; and Hunter Young added a 7-3 win over Jacob Davis.

Ford-Jackson (195) recorded a pin eight seconds into his match for the first of four straight Woodbridge pins. Phoenix Dean (220) won by fall with 1:33 left in the first period, Michael Hutchison had a pin with five seconds remaining in the first period, and Duane Cooke (106) recorded a pin with 1:10 left in the second period.

Laurel’s Nathan Austin (113) won by fall and Cody Drummond (120) won by fall with 1:46 left in the second period. The Bulldogs’ Kyler Weaver (126) topped Jonathon Webb, 9-4, to make the score 36-15.

Woodbridge’s Gavin Manning (132) won by fall with 54 seconds left in the first period and Brandon Williams (138) recorded a pin with three seconds left in the first period. Laurel’s James Johnson added a 17-12 win in the 145 pound match, but the Raiders won, 48-18.
