Samuel Charles Prettyman of Delmar, Del. passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at his home surrounded by loved ones, after a hard fought battle with cancer.

He was born on Jan. 4, 1950 to Raymond and Mae (Hastings) Prettyman, as one of six children. Sam graduated from Laurel High School in 1968. In his younger years, he enjoyed farming with his father and brothers and found enjoyment in working with his hands, which led Sam to become an avid carpenter, and later as a poultry farmer. He was the owner/operator of RKC Woodcrafts where he built lawn furniture and other woodcrafts. He enjoyed bird watching, western movies, and spending time with family.

Sam was preceded in death by his father Raymond Prettyman; his mother Mae (Hastings) Prettyman; his sister Martha Ellen Prettyman; his brother Freddie Prettyman; his brothers-in-law Steven Downs, Dwight Johnson, Jeffery Walls, and Richard Littleton as well as his former wife Barbara Prettyman.

Sam is survived by his wife Shirley (Downs) Prettyman and their three sons, Ryan (Megan) Prettyman, Kyle Prettyman (Abby Finch), Chase Prettyman all of Delmar; and his grandson Garrett Prettyman.

He is also survived by his sister Esther (Clarke) Hastings, sister Clara Belle Littleton, and brother Robert (Joyce) Prettyman; his sisters-in-law Lisa Walls, and Kathy Moore; as well as several nephews and a niece.

The family would like to thank Compassionate Care Hospice staff for their outstanding care and compassion during this time, especially to Mellissa and Whitney. The family will hold a graveside service at St. Stephens Cemetery in Delmar on Thursday, May 12 at 2 p.m. Flowers will be accepted at Short Funeral Home in Delmar or a donation can be made to Compassionate Care Hospice in Milford.
