Rose “Hettie’ Hitchens, 69

Rose “Hettie” Hitchens of Laurel, passed away on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.

Born in Milford on Oct. 2, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Rose Carey.

Hettie retired as a secretary for Carey’s Foreign & Domestic Auto. She enjoyed playing shuffleboard, reading, bowling, singing and dancing, going to the beach, and watching the sunrise over the ocean. Most importantly, she loved spoiling everyone with her delicious “Hettie food.” Cruising the seas and vacationing in Virginia Beach with her husband Gary were some of her favorite times.

Her family was her legacy and she always placed them first. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren immensely.

She is survived by her loving husband, Gary Hitchens; her children, Bob Cannon and his wife Wendy C., Wendy L. Cannon (David Long), Nicole Johnson and her husband Josiah, Brian Hitchens and his wife Melynda, and Susan Cannon; her brothers, Jack Tucker, Bill Tucker and his wife Shirley, and Buddy Tucker; her grandchildren, Heather Walker, Aaron Stone, Caitlin Stone, Megan Cannon, Hannah Cannon, Courtney Cannon, Zach Johnson, Beth Sharp, Meryha Neate, Zayne Johnson and Kaylie Cannon-Burger; and her great-grandchildren, Zayden Cannon, Kenley Hunt, Owen Walker, Elizabeth Neate, Kayley Michels, Daryan Michels, and Adelynne Finney.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dinah Carey.

A memorial service was held on Friday, Oct. 4, at Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, Laurel. The Rev. Robert M. Miller officiated.
